Emily B.
Country: Senegal
Dates of Service: March 9, 2011-May, 2013
Hometown: Butler, PA
What will you be speaking during service?  I'll be speaking some French as well as a national language to be determined. The most common language is Wolof but there are others that I may learn.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try?  I've actually been to Senegal twice before so I have tried a lot of the foods already! However, I did just start eating chicken (have been a lifelong vegetarian/pescatarian) so I am excited to try one of the more famous dishes called yassa poulet. I have tried yassa with fish, but it is more typical with chicken. It is a stew of onions, lemons, and peppers and is deliciously tangy.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit?  If I think about it too long, I can't decide where I'm most eager to visit! I want to see the city of St. Louis on the northern coast, but I'm also excited to see the rural agricultural areas as that's the region I wrote about it in the thesis for my MA.
What non-typical super power would you most like to have?  I want to have the power to learn skills very quickly. For example, you go to a country, hear the language for a day or two and suddenly you are fluent. You practice an instrument a couple times and suddenly you have it.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?  Probably nachos, because you could change the ingredients to whatever you're in the mood for...for example, tomato-based salsa or mango-based?? Beans or no beans?? Spicy or not spicy?? Cheese or no cheese? The possibilities are endless!
What freaks/creeps/weirds you out the most?  I really do not like overripe fruits or veggies. Like when you get lettuce and some of the leaves are all dark green and mushy, or when you get fruit that's just mushy. Ugh. Gross.

Renee A.
Country: Malawi
Dates of Service: February 27, 2011- April 27, 2013
Hometown: Bel Air, MD
What will you be speaking during service?  I will most likely be speaking Chichewa, but apparently there are other languages in country that we could be trained for, so it could be a surprise!
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? Nsima, which is a porridge made of maize, is the staple of most meals and is served with relishes made of meats. I actually think I'll like it, I like porridgey/mushy kind of things (yes, weird). I've eaten food in West Africa before, so we'll have to see how it differs from Southeast Africa!
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit?  Lake Malawi!! Apparently it is super beautiful and one of the only times in Malawi you will be fully submerged in water. Pretty exciting.
What animal would you be for a day and why?  I would be my dog Bernard, so I could know what it was like to be the cutest pet ever and have the easiest life ever
What did you want to be when you were 10 years old?  When I was 10 I wanted to be an ice cream truck driver. (obviously I was ambitious and world conscious at an early age). Then my mom let me know that it wasn't actually a real job and they only worked during the summers. True heartbreak.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? CHOCOLATE!!!!!!!!! Chocolate chocolate chocolate. Forever. Please. Can we make this happen?
Jessica W.
Country: Moldova
Dates of Service: June 7, 2011-August 2013
Hometown: Baltimore, Maryland

What language will you be speaking in your country of service? I will be speaking Romanian and possibly Russian as well.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? Moldova apparently makes amazing wine, I can't wait to try it and even learn how to make it!
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? The Milestii Mici Winery-the largest underground wine city and has the largest collection of wine in the world!  I also look forward to crossing the border into Ukraine so visit where my grandparents lived.
Describe yourself in four words.  Silly.  Intuitive.  Compassionate.  Adventurous.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?  Baked macaroni and cheese!  Because it's the ultimate comfort food and you can't go wrong with anything cheesy!
What do you get nerdy about?  Television.  I hate most reality TV and prefer to watch National Geographic, History, and Discovery channels.

Ashley W.
Country: Mongolia
Dates of Service: June 2, 2011- August 20, 2013
Hometown: Rochester, NY

What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Mongolian. And I'm hoping to use a little of my Russian with the older generation to keep up on it, but that really depends on how they feel/felt about the Soviets.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? Airag (айраг) which is fermented mare's milk and the most popular drink. Apparently it also doubles as a powerful laxative which I foresee causing a lot of problems.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? Burkhan Khaldun - it's a sacred mountain as well as the birthplace (and supposed burial ground) of Genghis Khan. It was a restricted area during the Communist era so I'm not sure how feasible it will be to visit, but I think it'd be awesome.
What freaks/creeps/weirds you out the most? Well, the general list of things that freak me out is pretty long. But the one that freaks me out the most would definitely have to be heights. I'm one of those people that gets all dizzy and panicky when there's not much standing between me and a long fall and imminent death.
Describe yourself in four words. Polyglot. Sarcastic. Traveler.  Friend.
What is one thing you're bringing that serves no purpose other than to make you happy? A stuffed monkey. I'm really 3 years old at heart and like to have it around for cuddling and company. Don't judge, you know you're thinking about it now too.

Emily J.
Country: Kazakhstan
Dates of Service: March 8, 2011- May 25, 2013
Hometown: Woodbridge, VA
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? During my service in Kazakhstan my language focus will be primarily on Russian or Kazakh, but I won't know which language until I arrive in Kazakhstan.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? I am very nervous to try horse meat and sheep head in Kazakhstan, but I am super excited to try chai tea. Tea is such a huge part of the culture and one that I imagine I am going to enjoy!
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? I can't wait to visit the new capital city of Astana. I have heard that the architecture is absolutely incredible.
Why did you choose to do the project? I am excited about this project because it is going to show the
service that unifies all Peace Corps Volunteers, as well as the major differences that occur from country to county.

What did you want to be when you were 10 years old? When I was ten years old I wanted to be an Olympic gymnast. Shannon Miller was my role model
What is one thing you're bringing that serves no purpose other than to make you happy? The one thing I am bringing to Kazakhstan simply because it makes me happy is a journal filled with my favorite quotes one of my good friends gave me as a going away gift.

Tracy M.
Country: Botswana
Dates of Service: April 1, 2011- June 6, 2013
Hometown: Rochester, NY
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Setswana/English (hopefully more English than Setswana)
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? I am terrified of mopane worms, which are caterpillars, and they are apparently part of the traditional cuisine.  I'm also nervous about the amount of sour milk that seems to be an abundant part of the diet of Batswana (I'm lactose intolerant) and serobe, which is the cooked intestines of cow, goat or sheep, feet sometimes included. But I'm excited for African wine!
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? I am psyched to visit the Okavango River Delta in Botswana.
If PC said that I could only bring 3 items with me for my service, I would bring:
1. My camera
2. A change of underwear
3. My condom demonstration/contraception kit
What do you get nerdy about? I am most likely to get nerdy about anything to do with sexuality/sexual & reproductive health.  This includes basic biology, education, reproductive rights, LGBTQ equality, gender, and politics surrounding sexuality.
What freaks/creeps/weirds you out the most? People smells freak me out the most- to include BO, strong cologne or perfume, and cigarette smoke. I have a very sensitive nose and have been known to change seats in movie theaters over the slightest smell. This will no doubt prove difficult when I am in Botswana and probably not showering on a regular basis.

Ryan S.
Country: Morocco
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? I will not know definitively until I begin training, but I will either be learning Moroccan Arabic (called Darija), or one of two Berber dialects: Tamazight, or Tashelheit.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? I am very excited to have authentic couscous with a glass of mint tea!
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? I am more than excited to visit Casablanca and see its beautiful vistas, art deco buildings, fashionable clothing, Hassan II mosque, and cosmopolitan nightlife venues.
What did you want to be when you were 10 years old? At that age, I wanted to be an astronaut and "fly on the moon".
What is/are your favorite word(s)? I have been known to use the word "lollygag" quite a bit, but also deeply enjoy the words, "indubitably" and "lackadaisical".
Describe yourself in four words. Honest, caring, curious, nerdy.

Danielle V.
Country: Bulgaria
Dates of Service: March 28, 2011- June 19, 2013
Hometown: Topeka, KS

What language will you be speaking in your country of service?  Primarily Bulgarian, but I'd love to be in an area where I could pick up a little Turkish too.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? Hmm...I haven't looked too much into Bulgarian foods, but I've heard some stories about rakia (super strong alcohol that is a staple in Bulgarian households), so I'm a bit nervous about that since I don't drink!
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? The mountains and the Black Sea
If instead of the 80/100 pounds of luggage we're allowed, PC said we're only allowed to bring 3 items - what would you bring? A notebook filled with advice/stories/brilliant thoughts/etc that my friends have been contributing to (it's *very* similar to this project actually), my laptop, and a good friend.
What do you get nerdy about? I could nerd out for *hours* about the following: anthropology, our new media landscape (what it looks like, what the implications are, etc.), and all of the cool things that our minds are capable of. I listen to a lot of podcasts--This American Life, Radio Lab, Pop!Tech, and TED Talks, so I always carry around some good stories with me. If anyone listens to any of those, we should definitely talk! :)
Describe yourself in four words. Empathic. Nerdy. Curious. Silly.

Jessica H.
Country: Zambia
Dates of Service: January 31, 2011-April 23, 2013
Hometown: Brandon, FL

What language will you be speaking in your country of service? I will be speaking one of six languages (Bemba, Nyanja, Lunda, Tonga, Mambwe, and Kaonde), but will not be assigned a language until a week after I arrive.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? Apparently caterpillar season just ended! Yay! I'm quite happy that it will be a whole year before I have to encounter that, because I am not too excited about harvesting caterpillars, squeezing their guts out, and eating them raw or fried. Oh, and flying termites fall under the same category ;-)
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? I'm really just excited to be going in general, and I hope I get to see most everything in the country. One place that is world-known that I am sure to visit while I'm there is Victoria Falls.
What freaks/creeps/weirds you out the most? The single most thing that is terrifying me right now is the fact that lizards and geckos will be crawling all over through my grass roof...and supposedly dropping down on me from the ceiling! I HATE lizards!
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? Cheese! Although I won't be getting much of it in Zambia :-(
What is one thing you're bringing that serves no purpose other than to make you happy? Lots of games! Scrabble, Yahtzee, Cards, Phase 10, Dutch Blitz Cards, etc.
Liz S.
Country: Uganda
Dates of Service: February, 2011-April, 2013
Hometown: Gainesville, FL
What language will you be speaking in your country of service?  I've been sent lessons in Lugandan, which is spoken mainly in the south of country in the Bantu region.  There are about 45 local languages in addition to English and Swahili spoken in the country, so until I get there I have no idea what I will be learning exactly.
Is there a national food or beverage that you're excited or nervous to try? Pork knuckles and other street food... these would be in the "excited" category.  I love trying new things and have watched enough Anthony Bourdain to know that street vendors who serve their neighbors on a daily basis are the best places to eat because they have to make good food since their clientele is the people around them, not the tourists who come through and eat at restaurants.  Also Amy said the pork knuckles are to die for.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you're eager to visit?  Any of the national parks in the south/west of the country, anywhere I can see the typical "safari" animals, and I am jonesing to go white water rafting on the Nile!
What do you get nerdy about?  Harry Potter.  Harry Potter, Harry Potter, Harry Potter.  I will discuss anything and everything Harry Potter related; trivia, theories, criticisms, comparing it to classical literature, comparing it to Twilight, why Severus Snape and Hedwig both, equally, bring me to to tears, Dobby, just ask.
What is one thing you're bringing that serves no other purpose than to make you happy?  I have a blue dyed/quilted wall hanging thing that my friend bought me when she spent a semester in India.  I am bringing it to decorate my home and remind me of not only her, but of how much of the world is out there for me to see.
What non-typical super power would you like to have?  I would like to have the ability to be perfectly tan all the time, with no effort on my part whatsoever.

Kim A.
Country: Peru
Dates of Service: June 9, 2011-August 18, 2013
Hometown: Great Falls, VA / Washington, DC
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Spanish, hopefully a bit of Quechua too
Is there a national food or beverage that you're excited or nervous to try? nervous: guinea pig  excited: chicha (homemade fermented drink, usually from maize)
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you're eager to visit? Cuzco and Machu Picchu obviously, but also Trujillo and other regional cities
What did you want to be when you were 10 years old?  I wanted to be a dentist/orthodontist.  I had a really fun dentist and never had a cavity, retainer, tooth pulled, braces, or other "bad" experience, so I guess that partially explains my strange affection for the profession!  Eventually I realized that doctors have to go to a lot of graduate school and take a lot of science classes, and those were deal-breakers for me.  Then I wanted to be a dolphin trainer.
What non-typical super power would you like to have? (don't know if this counts!) I wish I had the ability to stop time- NOT fast forward or rewind as in the movie Click, but just the ability to pause time.  This way, I could really have "more hours in the day" for reading, sleeping, watching TV, and hanging out with friends.
What do you get nerdy about? I love learning and wish that I could take university classes forever (minus the reading, papers, and tests).  I love grammar, office supplies, and filling out forms.  I love Star Wars and Harry Potter.  Sorry, was I supposed to give only one answer?

Jovanka B.
Country: Romania
Dates of Service: April 26, 2011- July 26, 2013
Hometown: Griffith, Indiana
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Romanian and i'm assuming if i'm close to another country's border, bits of that neighboring country's language as well
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try?  Wikipedia says that: "drob de miel - a lamb haggis made of minced organs wrapped in a caul and roasted like a meatloaf" is apparently a traditional easter dish. anything with ORGANS in it, i'm not a big fan of.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? Every single part of it! From Transylvania to the Black Sea! I can't wait!
If instead of the 80/100 pounds of luggage we're allowed, PC said we're only allowed to bring 3 items - what would you bring?  I would bring my iPhone because it works as a computer, camera, kindle, and so much more. It is the technological version of a Swiss army knife! My glasses- i'm blind as a bat and would probably end up walking off a cliff if i were to leave home without them. Index cards-from what I've heard from current volunteers in Romania, index cards to not exist in the country.
Describe yourself in four words.
Loud. Sarcastic. Loyal. Carefree
What is one thing you're bringing that serves no purpose other than to make you happy? I am a huge fan of the Cyanide&Happiness comic strips. My best friend bought me a C&H stuffed doll that I think is the coolest thing since sliced bread. It is going to be one of the first things I pack because it will be a nice reminder of home and someone I care a lot about.

Service Dates: March 21, 2011-June 16, 2013

Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try?  I am pretty excited to try varenyky and eat perogies all day long.  I’m not too stoked about salo, though.  I have, however, committed myself to trying anything offered to me (possibly to be regretted after tasting some things…)
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? Chernobyl! Well, more like the deserted towns and villages around there for photo adventure purposes.  I am sure this will not be permitted by PC :(  So it is a good thing that I am okay with just visiting Odessa and playing in sunflower fields!
What freaks/creeps/weirds you out the most? I find Claymation incredibly disturbing and cannot watch it, it totally freaks me out.  The sound of joints popping and cracking also makes me cringe as I just think you are going to snap your neck or pop off a finger. Ick!
What animal would you be for a day and why? A penguin! I would seriously spend my day hanging with seals and sliding on my belly after jumping out of freezing water.  Bad ass.
What is one thing you're bringing that serves no purpose other than to make you happy? Cut out pages of a children’s book called “Not A Box” and my collection of concert tickets and music decorations for the walls in my house/apartment.  Both remind me of awesome times with friends.

I am most excited about trying all of the fresh fruit!
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit?

What do you get nerdy about?
I get pretty nerdy about Bob Dylan music. If you played me a song from one of his studio albums from 1976 or before, I could tell you the name of the song, which album it was from, and the year the album came out. I am now working on extending my knowledge to post-1976 albums.
Do you have a hidden talent? Spill about it!
I can touch my nose with my tongue! I can also bend my tongue into a U-shape with the tip toward the back of my mouth and touch my uvula. Hopefully, you can imagine what I mean because it is kind of hard to explain!
What freaks/creeps/weirds you out the most?
The Bermuda Triangle definitely freaks me out the most. I read a book about it in third grade and have been terrified of it ever since.

Alicia P.
Country: Fiji
Dates of Service: May 2011- July 2013
Hometown: Jonesboro, Arkansas
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? I will be speaking a mixture of Fijian, Hindi, and English. Due to the touristy nature of Fiji, almost everyone can speak limited English.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? There is a drink that the locals are crazy about called Kava or Yanqona (pronounced yang- go- nah) that is made from mashed up root and water. It is not alcoholic, but has the same effect on your mind and reflexes as alcohol. It is supposed to taste like drinking muddy water through a straw, but from what I have read EVERYONE drinks it, almost every night, and it is the only way to connect with the people and be a part of the community.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? There is no place in particular in Fiji I want to visit, since it is a relatively small island, well small islands, I want to see it all.  I hope to see everything from the white sand beaches, soft coral reefs, tropical rainforests, waterfalls, mountains, canyons that I can raft in, hot springs to soak in and world class waves to surf on. ( I hope I have enough time off so that I can learn how to surf!)
What do you get nerdy about? I get nerdy about books. I read 8-10 a month. My kindle is packed full and ready to go.

Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? I have actually been to Paraguay before, so I know what to expect! By far the greatest anomaly to Paraguay is their obsession with tereré, which is an infusion of yerba maté, except prepared cold! Paraguayans drink this day and night. I am also excited to eat Sopa Paraguaya, a traditional food that is similar to corn bread.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? I am excited to visit Ciudad del Este, a city on the border of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. From there one of the most beautiful waterfall destinations in the world, Iguazu Falls, is merely a stone's throw away!
What is the one thing you're bringing that serves no purpose other than to make you happy? Tools for a pedicure- nail cutters, foot scrub, moisturizing lotion, and silk socks. Sometimes when you're living out in the campo for months on end, the smallest things can make you feel as if you're in a luxury spa.
What did you want to be when you were 10 years old? When I was 10 years old my aspiration was to go to college right next to my parent's house and then buy the house next to theirs. I guess you can see how far I've come since then!
Describe yourself in four words. Social Entrepreneur, Traveler, Reader
Heidi W.
Country: Rwanda

Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? I have yet to learn all the must sees in Rwanda but I suppose Gorillas are a must see. Partners in Health just opened a hospital in Butaro and it would be a dream come true to see PIH's incredible work with my own two eyes.
What did you want to be when you were 10 years old? I can't remember from when I was 10, but I have a distinct memory of being in the fourth grade and wanting to be a rodeoing plant biologist. Actually when I was 10 I thought I'd be a truck driver to earn some good money before going to college.
What non-typical super power would you most like to have? I would like to have the powers of teleportation since my family and friends have spread themselves throughout the nation/world. It would save me a bundle on airfare and allow me to see them more often. Fun fact: I have PCV friends currently in Cameroon, South Africa, Bulgaria, Armenia, and Belize.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? Breakfast. Once I met a date for brunch and when they told me they didn't like breakfast much I knew that was the end of it.

Hometown: Los Angeles, CA

What language will you be speaking in your country of service?  Im not sure what language i'll be speaking, it can be spanish, belizean kriol, english or some mayan dialect.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? I don't really know of any Belizean national dishes or drinks but I have heard about gibnut (rodent family) and I'm pretty afraid to try that although I'm sure i'll have to eat it at some point during my service.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? I'm most excited to visit the cayes on the caribbean sea. Hopefully i'll get a chance to be touristy and go snorkling and all that fun stuff.
If instead of the 80/100 pounds of luggage we're allowed, PC said we're only allowed to bring 3 items - what would you bring? I would bring my iPod, my cell phone, my lap top. Everything else i could purchase while I'm in country or have it sent to me. I chose my cell phone because i love blackberry :)
What do you get nerdy about? I am completely obsessed with Mariah Carey. I have yet to meet anyone that loves her as much as i do. I don't know if that makes me nerdy or just scary LOL, most of my friends just think im crazy.... For the curious: no I would not freak out if i saw her in person. I've actually seen her in person a few times, even once at my job with no security or cameras, just Mariah hanging out in the lobby.
What non-typical super power would you most like to have?  I always wish that I could go to sleep and wake up in any destination that I wanted. Not only would i wake up in my destination, i would have my suitcases with me in the morning. That way i can avoid airports, security and sitting on a plane for hours.

What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Russian and/or Kyrgyz

Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit?  Issyk Kul Lake is a massive salt-water lake in northeast Kyrgyzstan which is believed to be the point of origin of the Black Death.  I look forward to take a dip.  I live dangerously!
What freaks/creeps/weirds you out the most?  Spiders. Period. I'm not afraid of heights, snakes, the dark, tight spaces, crowds, isolation, death or the the Easter Bunny.  But if I see a harmless spider in one corner of the house I don't sleep well that night and have nightmares!
Do you have a hidden talent? Spill about it!  I have played drums since I was 9 years old.  I have performed all over the world and have shared the stage with internationally recognized figures.  Despite my talents and frequent performances, almost none of my closest friends have ever even see me hold a pair of drumsticks (even though there is always a pair in my backpack which never leaves my side)
If instead of the 80/100 pounds of luggage we're allowed, PC said we're only allowed to bring 3 items - what would you bring?
- Laptop
- Oakley sunglasses
- My favorite deodorant

What do you get nerdy about? Harry Potter! I am trying to devise a way to see the final movie while serving in Kenya. I also get nerdy reading about emerging infectious diseases and public health reports (particularly hemorrhagic fevers and injury prevention).
Describe yourself in four words.  Open-minded, funny, compassionate and steadfast

Jenn B.
Country: Swaziland
Service Dates: June 7, 2011 - August 5, 2013
Hometown: Newark, Delaware

What language will you be speaking in your country of service?  English & siSwati
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try?  I'm excited to try emahewu - it's a fermented milk and maize based yogurt-ish type food.  I'm a little nervous about edible insects!
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit?  Though Swaziland is a very small country, the topography varies from lush mountains to lowlands - I'm excited to explore each of the regions.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?  It would have to be my mom's homemade gnocchi and sauce.  It's heavy and filling and all you want to do after eating it is unbutton your pants and take a nap.  It's soooo yummy (it's my requested last US meal).
What is one thing you're bringing that serves no purpose other than to make you happy? knitting needles and yarn
What animal would you be for a day and why?  I would be a sea otter.  They are so playful - they make me laugh!  Plus, how relaxing would it be to spend hours floating around on my back.

Megan T.
Country: China
Service Dates:  June 29, 2011- August 10, 2013
Hometown: Washington, D.C.

What language will you be speaking in your country of service? I will be speaking Mandarin, I have been trying to learn it, with that being said, I have a feeling my miming skills are going to become superb in the first few months on site.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? I am really excited to try hot pot-a typical dish from Sichuan, it's a communal dish, that is basically the spicy totally insane Chinese version of fondue.  Simultaneously memorizing the phrases "Please not too spicy"- Sichuan is known for their super hot chili peppers- and "I don't eat dog."
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? I have actually been to China before, but I stuck to the main tourist spots. I am definitely getting keen to go hiking up along the border of Tibet- or even horse trekking in Langmusi. I also would love to hike in the Tiger Leaping Gorge, and go trekking around the Yunnan Province, which apparently is very popular amongst PCVs.
If instead of the 80/100 pounds of luggage we're allowed, PC said we're only allowed to bring 3 items - what would you bring?
1) My iPad- yes I am a snobby hipster when it comes to those 1.5 pounds of plastic and metal, it has the essentials, episodes of How I Met Your Mother and Scrubs, my favorite movies and music as well as access to a bajillion (yes I plan on teaching that as a valid term  to my future students) books on Kindle, plus when I am traveling across China on a bus/train/ yak I'll have Angry Birds to soothe me.
2) Pictures of my family and friends- every time I move the first thing I do is put up pictures of the people I love. It evokes great memories and makes any place feel like home.
3) A copy of my Teacher's Treasure Trove Activities. I got this back in Australia and even though it is designed for TEFL classes, I have been using it in the GED class I help teach in DC.
What did you want to be when you were 10 years old? Cowgirl that became the President. Now that I think back, it was like I was a mini female version of Bush. Not too proud of little me. :D
What do you get nerdy about? Anything to do with international politics, especially looking at America's position within Asia. If a person can present a coherent argument on the strategic aspects of international politics, I become putty in their hands. In addition to that, I am currently working as a volunteer teacher with a GED course which has reignited my love for biology and chemistry. I actually enjoy doing lesson plans because I get to watch amazing documentaries, conduct experiments, create fun worksheets and activities, but the best part is I am no longer graded!

What do you get nerdy about? Jane Austen books and movies! (What woman doesn't want a Mr. Darcy?).
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? Irish Nachos. There is something so copacetic about potatoes smothered in bacon and cheese.

What animal would you be for a day and why? I would be a snake or a cuttlefish because snakes don't have legs and are almost blind but are one of the most successful predators and cuttlefish because they can camouflage into anything and can become anything they want.
Describe yourself in four words? creative, curious, energetic, passionate
What non typical superpower would you most like to have? I would like to be able to walk so fast that I would eventually lift up and fly like planes do.

Alex L.
Country: Albania
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Albanians speak Shqip and I will too.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? In Albania, a very popular alcohol is called raki which is their version of moonshine. I'm slightly afraid that I might go blind but I want to try it.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? I'm looking forward to going to the beaches in southern Albania. I hear they're nice and not too crowded.
What animal would you be for a day and why? I'd be a Bigfoot for a day and find all their hiding spots.
What did you want to be when you were 10 years old? In the 3rd grade I wanted to grow up to be a surgeon. My goal was to "save at least 10 people a year".
Why did you choose to do the project? I chose to join this project because I want to be part of something bigger than my service alone. I want to leave a mark and this is a great opportunity. Plus, it's pretty exclusive.
Kelsey K.
Country: Ethiopia
Dates of Service: May 23, 2011- August 4, 2013
Hometown: Fremont, CA
Why did you choose to do the project?  When I found out that I would be starting my PC service during the 50th Anniversary year I was really excited! I am a very sentimental person and I think it is really amazing to be part of a celebration that will only come around once in Peace Corps' history! I love that we have the opportunity to document the unique experience and way of life in the countries we will be serving in, and through this project will be able to share with others and hopefully spread the notion of a peaceful coexistence in the world.
What did you want to be when you were 10 years old?  When I was 10 years old I wanted to be a Teacher. Since then I have gone in the direction of the Health Care field, hoping to eventually pursue a  career in Public Health and/or Nursing. However, although my dreams have taken a turn in the past 11 years, there is still a part of me that would love to teach. I think teaching is among the most noble professions in the world, and I hope to take my try at it while serving in the Peace Corps. In whatever capacity I can manage, I hope to teach my community as much as I'm certain they will teach me!
What is/are your favorite word(s)? My favorite word is ECSTATIC! I love the word because I am a very emotional and excited person, and often times I feel that this word is the only one that truly describes the way I feel!

Dani S.
Country: Guatemala
Dates of Service: May 26, 2011-July 17, 2013
Hometown: Flemington, NJ
What language will you be speaking in your country of service?  I will be speaking Spanish, and possibly a Mayan language.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? Someone’s blog mentioned cow hoof soup…that makes me a bit nervous!  Tortillas and tamales on the other hand are awesome!
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? Hmm, well besides wherever my site will be it is hard to pick one place that I am eager to visit because there are just too many cool places! Between the mountains, volcanoes, jungles, lakes, beaches, and cities like Antigua I will have a ton to visit.
If instead of the 80/100 pounds of luggage we're allowed, PC said we're only allowed to bring 3 items - what would you bring? Alright this one is easy I would bring two photos from home one of my family, one of friends and a credit card so I could purchase more practical things upon arrival.
What do you get nerdy about? HIV testing, super weird I know! I have multiple shirts that say things like be smart get tested, and I have been known to go on and on about reducing the stigmatization around being tested which tends to freak my friends and random people on subways out.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? Everything bagels. In the process of packing up my room so it can be turned into an office/gym after I leave in April I discovered one of those books that parents keep about their children, apparently since I was two years old bagels have been my favorite food. Despite their meager nutritional value and my mom’s threats that I would turn into one, I still have to go with bagels.

Lauren S.
Country: Nicaragua

Hometown: Boston, MA
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Spanish

If instead of the 80/100 pounds of luggage we're allowed, PC said we're only allowed to bring 3 items-what would you bring? My journal, french press, and deodorant.
What do you get nerdy about? I like to pretend that I can rap.  For my 23rd birthday, my roommates got me a "how to rap" book.  I opened up to a random page that was entitles d "Knowing When to Stop." Sorry, book, you can't stop Lil' Lauren. And why would you want to?!
What is one thing you're bringing that serves no purpose other than to make you happy? My little Buddha statue that represents joy.  Everytime I see his happy face and big belly, I smile. I can't help it.

Kelly C.
Country: Guyana
Dates of Service: February 13, 2011-April 13, 2013
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? The official language of Guyana is English!  Lucky me, huh? However, Guyanese Creole is a commonly spoken dialect that varies from community to community, and sometimes is so different from standard English that it requires translation.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? A large portion of Guyana's population is of Indian descent, so I'm definitely eager to try the Guyanese take on Indian food!
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? I'm looking forward to visiting the rainforest in the interior of the country, for sure, especially Kaieteur Falls, a waterfall that's four times the size of Niagra Falls.
What freaks/creeps/weirds you out the most? Every since I was a kid, food touching on my plate has made me kind of twitchy.  I know, it all touches once it's in my stomach, but there's something about my spaghetti sauce leaking onto my vegetables that gets under my skin like nothing else.
What did you want to be when you were 10 years old? I wanted to be an author-illustrator! My drawing skills peaked at about age 10, so I've given up any aspirations to illustrate, but I still love to write, and this journal project is a wonderful opportunity to do so!
What do you get nerdy about? I was an English major, so I'm a stickler for grammar and spelling.  I try not to be an elitist about it, but every time I read something I edit it in my head.

Amy G.
Country: Mali
Dates of Service: June 1, 2011-August 15, 2013
Hometown: Charleston, WV
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? I'll be communicating in French and a local language that will be determined when I arrive for my Peace Corps training in June.  Bit, it is probably a good idea to study a little Bambara, which is the most widely-spoken local language in Mali.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? I'm really excited to try the popular peanut butter sauce dish also known as Tiga Diga Na.  I love peanut butter on almost anything and if its similar to the peant sauce dish I've had in Senegal then it should be pretty good. I am nervous to try La Capitaine Sangha which is supposedly a fish delecacy with a fancy hot chili sauce.  I am not a huge fan of spicy food, but if I can wash it down with bissap juice I think I'll be able to get used to it.  When I studied abroad in Senegal, I loved buying bags of frozen bissap juice from street vendors so I'm really glad bissap is also popular in Mali.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? I was fortunate enough to have traveled to Mali before when I studied abroad in Senegal two years ago.  For my spring beak that year, my friends and I went to Dogon Country for about a week.  We wend in mid-March which is months after the rainy season so it was really dry and hot, but there were beautiful landscapes and amazing hiking.  I hope to travel back to Dogon Country in the Fall so I can see taht part of Mali at a different time of year with all of its waterfalls and rich biodiversity.  I also want to go to the annual desert festival in Timbuktu.  And it would be great to stop by the Sahara Desert and see if there's any dune surfing to be had.
If you could only eat onr food for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? I would have to say avacados not only because they are good for you, but also because they are delicious.  And I could make guacamole with them any time I wanted.  I don't know if Mali will have avacados, but it will be an adjustment not being able to have them whenever I want.
What animal would you be for a day and why? I would love to be a panda for a day.  Mostly because they are adorable and who doesn't love pandas?
What is one thing you're bringing that serves no purpose other than to make you happy? I will be bringing David Sedaris' book on tape, Naked, because its hilarious and will remind me to laugh at myself.
Jenny C.
Country: Lesotho
Dates of Service: May 31, 2011-August 2013
Hometown: Eugene, Oregon
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Sesotho
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? Excited to try fried cakes (like donuts).
Is there somewhere in your country of service you are eager to visit? Thabana Ntlenyana (highest peak in Lesotho)
If instead of the 80/100 pounds of luggage we're allowed, PC said we're only allowed to bring 3 items- what would you bring?  Pictures of my US life, Aveda moisturizer, and running shoes
What did you want to be when you were 10 years old? A doctor
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? Peanut butter and jelly sandwiched...because thery give me lots of energy and I love sweets.

Nehama R.
Country: Philippines
Dates of Service: July 1, 2011-September 9, 2013
Hometown: Cleveland, Ohio
I hear the desserts in the Philippines are incredible, sugar-filled tropical delights--I'm definitely excited for that.  As a vegetarian, I'm not so excited to encounter lechon (roast pig) everywhere.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? Tropical beaches.
Do you have a hidden talent? Spill about it! I can peel bananas with my feet.  It's always a good talent-show routine.
If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?  Spaghetti! It's been my favorite food since I was a baby, and will always make me happy.
What is one thing you're bringing that serves no purpose other than to make you happy? Some mementos and decorations to hang on the walls of my hut (or apartment/house/wherever) that will help connect me to my friends and family at home.
Susan B.
Country: Georgia
Dates of Service: April 25, 2011-July 14, 2013
Hometown: Washington, D.C.
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Fingers crossed, I'll be speaking Georgian.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? Georgia is the oldest wine producing country in the world, so needless to say I'm excited to try their wine--and their homemade cheeses! I read about a dish, however, called jigari which is a stew made with livers, hearts, and kidneys that I totally plan to avoid.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? Since Georgia is fairly small (about the size of South Carolina), I hope I'll be able to see everything! The 4th century monasteries, local vineyards and the Holy Trinity Church are definite musts, and I really hope I'll be able to explore the Caucasus Mountains (some areas are off limits to Volunteers).
What freaks/creeps/weirds you out the most?  Without question: spiders.  There is just something so wrong and unsettling about the fact that something so little can literally kill you.  Ugh, it gives me the chills just thinking about it!
If instead of the 80/100 pounds of luggage we're allowed, PC said we're only allowed to bring 3 items, what would you bring? Assuming I still can't take my pets, I would bring my camera, my running shoes, and my laptop since that would give me access to my Kindle books, photos, music, and the Internet.
What do you get nerdy about? Grammar!! I just can't comprehend how so many people don't know basic grammar rules like the difference between possesive and plural, you're/your and their/they're/there--or the difference between proper and common nouns.  Oh, and on the Bachelor (yes, I watch it and no, I'm not proud of it), they ALL say "Brad and I's relationship..."--there's no such word as "I's"!!!  If I could carry a red pen with me and edit everything in my path, I would be so content.

Kate M.  (Serving with husband, Chris)
Country: Cambodia
Dates of Service: July 19, 2011-September 30, 2013
Hometown: Gaithersburg, MD
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Khmer
Is there a national food that you are a little nervous or super excited to try? I'm pretty excited about the many varieties of fruit available in country, but also a bit nervous to try the crickets and other insects I hear are a tasty treat!
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? You have to say Angkor Wat, right?  Really, though, I'm looking forward to the many historic wats, and the Gulf of Thailand.
What did you want to be when you were 10 years old? I was absolutely convinced, at 10, that I would be one of the following: an award winning actress, an environmental activist (I even practiced making picketing signs) or a medical researcher (I was determined to discover the cure for some awful disease.)  From that, you can probably guess that I've a flair for the dramatic, I'm passionate to the extreme about certain issues (though, now, you'd say it was educational equity for all), and I really wanted to make a difference in the world.
What do you get nerdy about? There are too many things to count here.  Harry Potter always whips me into a frenzy, I can recite facts and personal stories about the fight to end inequalities in education, and I get way into baking.
Describe yourself in four words. I'm energetic, outgoing, passionate, and kooky.

Chris M. (Serving with wife, Kate)
Country: Cambodia
Hometown: Gaithersburg, MD
Dates of Service: July 19, 2011-September 30, 2013
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Khmer
Is there a national food that you are a little nervous or super excited to try? Egg with partially formed duck fetus makes me a little nervous, but excited at the same time.  I am actually looking forward to the insects. When I once visited Vietnam, I saw the snake wine that locals had in their homes and I hear Cambodia has the same tradition.  I was a little weary of trying that last time, but I hope while serving in Cambodia.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? Angkor Wat is one of my bucket list top ten destinations of all time, so I know that and many of the other beautiful and unique Buddhist temples will be just awe inspiring. I think I am most looking forward to seeing the things that tourists don't take the chance to- rural rice paddies and overflowing rivers in the monsoon season sound like pretty amazing sights to see.
What freaks/creeps/weirds you out the most? Rats. Never been used to them and they always give me the creeps despite seeing them on a daily basis in Washington, D.C. for about six years.
What animal would you be for a day and why? I feel like bird is a common answer because it can fly, but I think I would choose a fish or ocean-dwelling creature because of the totally different perspective it has. I also love to SCUBA dive.
Do you have a hidden talent? Spill about it! Not really, I consider myself a jack of all trades- so I can probably help you out a little with anything to some extent, but the project would likely be left unfinished or done incorrectly if it were left only to my knowledge. I can brew my own beer- does that count?

Caroline H.
Country: Suriname
Hometown: Peachtree City, GA
Dates of Service: May 3, 2011-July 12, 2013
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Sranan Tongo and a local language to be determined.
Is there a national food that you are a little nervous or super excited to try? I am super excited to try the noni fruit! The locals call it a "cure-all" fruit despite how bad it smells.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? The Galibi Nature Reserve is home to giant sea turtles and I cannot wait to see them in person!
What animal would you be for a day and why? A platypus. Why? Because given the option of any animal in the world, I will always pick the funny looking one with the weird name. Every time.
What did you want to be when you were 10 years old? The pink power ranger. I don't know what I was thinking, the yellow power ranger is clearly the cooler girl of the group.
What do you get nerdy about? Platypuses.

Val S.
Country: Jamaica
Hometown: Westmoreland, NH
Dates of Service: June 28, 2011-September 2, 2013
What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Jamaican patois-- an English-based Creole language with West African influences.
Is there a national food that you are a little nervous or super excited to try? Ital food! Thanks to the beautiful Rasta culture, vegetarianism and veganism are widely-accepted on the island. My eighteen years of vegetarianism will remain intact! Each Rasta may have their own definition of Ital food, but the general principle is that food should be natural, pure, and tends to be vegetarian or pescatarian. Most artificical additives, preservatives, and even salt are not consumed.  Sometimes foods that have been influenced by pesticides/fertilizers are not considered Ital either.  Other than Ital, Gizzada, a sweet coconut tart, sounds heavenly.  Pescatarianism will inevitably occur when I try the national dish, Ackee and Salt fish.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? It's Jamaica; I'm eager for everything! From mountains to mangroves, sea to cities, rivers, farmland, beaches, and rainforests-- I want to see it all.
What do you get nerdy about? Postmodern educational theory, sustainable farming, food security, holistic living, honey bees & beekeeping, modern dance theory and choreography critique. And yes, I too cried when Dumbledore died, and when reading the dedication for the final book
What is/are yout favorite word(s)? To quote Zadie Smith's White Teeth: "Pulchritude-- beauty where you would least suspect it, hidden in a word that look[s] like it should signify a belch or a skin infection."
What non-typical super power would you most like to have? The ability to consume trash without creating toxic waste.  Great Pacific Garbage Pathc? Delish. *Poof* Gone. And in its place-- a lovely archipelago of compost with flowers growing all over. Tra la.

What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Based on what has appeared on my PC website, I will be learning Sepedi, Setswana, or isiZulu … or possibly all three.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? It might take me a while to work up an appetite for the Mopani worm/caterpillar, a local delicacy. It can be served either boiled or fried or mixed with tomatoes and onions. The latter might work.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? The Drakensburg mountains. This is a huge and beautiful area dividing Lesotho from KwaZulu-Natal province and features towering mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and alpine grasslands. By all accounts, a hiker's paradise.
What freaks/creeps/weirds you out the most? Snakes! As a child, I used to have literally nightmares after seeing pictures of snakes. Within hours of being invited to serve in South Africa, I checked the internet to see what snakes are found in that region. Oh my, mambas (both green and black), adders (puffed and horned), and occasional cobras! I currently live where there are rattlesnakes, corals, moccasins, and copperheads, yet I almost never see them, so maybe I shouldn’t worry too much. I’ll check under the bed each night in South Africa, just in case.
What did you want to be when you were 10 years old? When I was ten years old, I wanted to be a flight attendant. At that time, I had never been on a plane or out of southeastern part of the county. Meeting a lot of people, helping make passengers safe and comfortable, AND traveling the world seemed like a glorious job.
What do you get nerdy about? Making lists! Such lists would include: To-do lists, people to call/see/email (separate lists for each), lifetime “bucket list”, items to pack, websites to check, books to read, recipes to make, grocery items to buy, etc.. I have even on occasion made lists of lists. I particularly enjoy the feeling of accomplishment when crossing items off the lists.

What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Akan
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? I’m scared that I am going to eat something that is really spicy and not know it till my mouth is in pain.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? The tropical forest in the Ashanti Uplands.
What freaks/creeps/weirds you out the most? Raw meat
What animal would you be for a day and why? Some kind of flying animal or an animal that can breathe underwater, because I would like to see the world from a different view.
What do you get nerdy about? Soil, because there are so many different factors that can make a soil very interesting.

What language will you be speaking in your country of service? French
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? I love fish and apparently it is widely eaten in Cameroon. Specifically I love to poach fish.
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? Mount Cameroon
What freaks/creeps/weirds you out the most? Not much creeps me out. The idea of dealing with rats, mice and bugs during my service doesn't get me rattled. Which is shocking because I am very much a girly girl. I grew up with pet mice and my mother literally raised myself and my sister in our huge garden. The thing that does get me freaked is the idea of parasitic worms crawling through my skin and infesting my organs. That freaks me out. I will be avoiding water excursions at all costs while in Cameroon.
What animal would you be for a day and why? Any pet that lives in my house. They are so spoiled. Especially our chickens. We have very spoiled chickens.
Why did you choose to do the project? I am already exchanging several journals amongst family and friends. My sister and I will be sending a journal back and forth. Also, my two best friends and I will also be sending journals. To extend the process to a worldwide collaboration was a no brainer. One of the goals for the PC is to bring a sense of your country's culture and people back to America. The snapshots project fits perfectly into this goal. I think once it is finished it will be an amazing collection; to be part of that collection will be incredibly rewarding and exciting.

What language will you be speaking in your country of service? Swahili! I've started learning it and I'm super excited, because it sounds awesome! However, almost everyone in Tanzania speaks Swahili as a second language, so I'll probably have to learn some of my community's first language as well.
Is there a national food or beverage you are a little nervous or super excited to try? I'm a little hesitant about ugali, the maize porridge that's the country's primary staple food. But, I hear there's a lot of vegetables and lots of spices in the dishes they serve with the ugali, and I'm super excited for that. I love spicy foods, and I'm really hoping I can learn to cook some tasty Tanzanian dishes when I'm there. And fruits! I love fruit!
Is there somewhere in your country of service that you are eager to visit? Seriously, it's Tanzania, where don't I want to visit? There's Kilimanjaro and Lake Victoria and Zanzibar and the Serengeti plains and the Ngorongoro Crater (where a teacher of mine insists he saw the only ghost of his life) and Gombe national park where Jane Goodall did her research. I really lucked out to get a country full of such awesome places.
If instead of the 80/100 pounds of luggage we're allowed, PC said we're only allowed to bring 3 items - what would you bring? My Kindle, Glowie, the stuffed animal I've had since my first Christmas, and my knitting (if I can be sneaky and count both the yarn and the needles together as one item).
What non-typical super power would you most like to have? Teleportation. End of story.
What do you get nerdy about? Shakespeare! I am such a Shakespeare geek it's not even funny. But I also get nerdy about just about everything I'm interested in. Theatre, knitting, cooking, reading, traveling, baseball, joining the Peace Corps. If I'm into it, I'll find a way to make it nerdy.
